Dana and Motiv Power Systems Collaborate on Integration of All-Electric Spicer Electrified e-Axle on Ford Super Duty F-550 Chassis

Electric vehicles are a growing market segment in the automotive industry, and many automakers are creating new platforms to support the electric powertrain. However, methods of electrifying existing vehicle platforms may provide a cost-effective way for automakers such as Ford to serve the e-mobility market for commercial vehicles, in this case.

Dana Incorporated and Motiv Power Systems have announced a collaboration to integrate Dana’s Spicer Electrified eS9000r e-Axle on the Ford F-550 chassis for use in commercial fleet applications. By replacing the traditional mechanical driveline with an electric motor integrated directly into the vehicle’s differential housing, the e-Axle provides greater design flexibility for battery placement and truck body attachment. In addition to Dana’s e-Axle technology, the chassis features Motiv’s proprietary electric powertrain controls.

Dana and Motiv Power Systems Collaborate on Integration of All-Electric Spicer® ElectrifiedTM e-Axle on Ford® Super Duty® F-550 Chassis

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Dana Incorporated (NYSE: DAN) and Motiv Power Systems today announced a collaboration to integrate Dana’s Spicer® Electrified™ eS9000r e-Axle on the Ford F-550 chassis for use in commercial fleet applications.

“Dana sees tremendous demand in the commercial vehicle space for full electrification, and the Ford F-550 chassis represents an ideal application for integrating our innovative e-Axle technology,” said Mark Wallace, president of Dana Commercial Vehicle Driveline Technologies. “Collaborating with pioneers like Motiv to offer integrated e-solutions enables commercial fleet owners to capitalize on the benefits of electrified vehicles.”

The Spicer Electrified eS9000r consists of an integrated motor, transmission, and axle system, and is designed as a “drop-in” replacement for existing axles used in medium-duty truck and bus applications. The vehicle is designed with a range of up to 90 miles and peak power of 226 kW for grade startability of 20 percent. Dana’s innovative e-Axle includes a patent-pending integrated parking mechanism (park pawl) that eliminates the need for an external solution.

“We’re proud of our role in this initial Ford F-550 application. It represents a combination of two complementary technologies in bringing electrification to commercial fleets,” said Matt O’Leary, CEO of Motiv. “We share a common vision with Dana of expanding the market profile of battery electric vehicles in commercial transportation and welcome the opportunity to collaborate with them to advance this goal.”

Dana and Motiv are collaborating to customize a Ford F-550 Chassis with an all-electric e-Axle. The vehicle can be used for box trucks, maintenance trucks, shuttle buses, and more. The customized chassis features lithium-ion batteries and is on display at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Long Beach, California, April 23-26, in Dana’s booth 1847 along with a comprehensive portfolio of Spicer Electrified solutions. Bimbo Bakeries USA, North America’s Leading Baked Goods Provider, Orders Motiv’s All-Electric EPIC® Chassis Equipped Step Vans

FOSTER CITY, Calif., —  (Motiv), the leading provider of all-electric medium duty fleet chassis for buses and trucks, announced today a five-vehicle purchase order from Bimbo Bakeries USA, the U.S. business of Mexico City-based Grupo Bimbo.

The vehicles will feature Motiv’s all-electric EPIC 6 chassis (based on the popular Ford F-59 platform) with step van bodies built by Utilimaster Corporation. Bimbo Bakeries USA will be deploying these vehicles for fuel-efficient product delivery in Ceres, California.

“Last mile delivery of baked goods is a perfect use case for EPIC based step vans,” said Matt O’Leary, Motiv’s CEO.  “These are high-volume, low-weight applications operating on fixed routes. As such, they are particularly well-suited for electrification.”

EPIC chassis feature Motiv’s proprietary operating software, which enables a unique, modular approach to safely and reliably control various battery and hardware technologies. They are Ford eQVM approved and CARB certified.

“Sustainability is built into our company’s Purpose – building a sustainable, highly productive, and deeply humane company, said Eric McCann, Field Service Manager for Bimbo Bakeries USA. “We are continuously looking for new ways to preserve the environment and reduce our carbon footprint. Incorporating these vehicles into our fleet is an important step toward reducing our fleet’s dependence on fossil fuels and we look forward to introducing the EPIC platform into our supply chain.”

The electric delivery vans will be fitted with Utilimaster’s step van bodies, the industry-standard for delivery and service vehicles, and will feature a highly modular cargo area and multiple door configurations, providing maximum versatility.

“Utilimaster is encouraged by the strong market response to our Motiv all-electric F-59 offering,” said Chad Heminover, President of Utilimaster Corporation. “It really comes as no surprise to see the rapid expansion of demand for these cost-effective, zero-emissions vehicles into an increasing cross-section of commercial fleet deployments.”

The Bimbo Bakeries USA vehicles will be sharing the road with Motiv’s other EPIC powered electric step vans, including recent deployments with United States Postal Service and AmeriPride Services, a subsidiary of Aramark Corporation.

Q&A: Motiv’s New Chief Executive Talks Change and Growth

When a young company announces that its founder is stepping down and a new chief executive is coming in, it’s usually a sign of either trouble or wisdom.

Former Ford trucks executive Matt O’Leary said his recent appointment as chief executive of Motiv Power Systems, replacing founder Jim Castelaz, signals the latter – the wisdom of an entrepreneurial founder.

Motiv founder and former Chief Executive Castelaz – also an engineer – will transition to chief technology officer for the Foster City, Calif., company. He’ll be working on new products and improvements aimed at expanding its line of electric chassis for medium-duty trucks.
