SELECTED PROJECTS
Motiv has worked with a variety of clients, doing design, simulation, and integration work. We have worked on full vehicle integration and sub-component detailed design.
Modular Battery System Design
Motiv has been employed by a leading battery cell manufacturer to design battery packs for their revolutionary lithium-based cells. Motiv is designing packs for multiple markets, including electric vehicles. Motiv’s design includes state-of-the-art charge and thermal management, as well as innovative structural design. This modular design works in a variety of applications and provides game-changing energy storage to the targeted industries. The pack design has significantly higher energy density than any currently available energy storage product while maintaining a competitive price with other alternatives.
Solar Bus Design
The Motiv team was contracted to review a planned installation of solar panels on the roof of a 45-foot motor coach. Motiv’s engineers reviewed the system design and identified significant design issues that were likely failure points. The team recommended alternative automotive-certified components that improved system functionality and brought system performance closer to the desired initial specification. The recommended changes lowered the total project cost. The final system used Motiv’s design to achieve better performance for a lower total cost, and has been in maintenance-free operation for months.
Capstone’s CMT-380
Capstone Microturbine brought in Motiv to complete integration work on the CMT-380 supercar for its debut at the 2009 LA Auto show. Motiv’s engineers built the battery pack, installed it in the vehicle, debugged the power electronics system, and completed the vehicle on time so that it could be driven on to the floor at the auto show. The car was a major hit at the auto show, and a major PR success for Capstone.
Turbine Management System
After its success with the CMT-380, the Motiv team was hired for a follow-on project to design the Turbine Management System. This embedded system uses real-time battery state estimation and an advanced, predictive power control algorithm to manage the turbine and set its operating power level. Motiv’s power control system is utilized by the CMT-380 supercar to manage the interoperability of the turbine, battery and motor systems.
